Zoos and Animal Parks
This park is just to the west of Toulouse. This is a drive-around safari, where you can see lions, rhinos, deer, and giraffe to name but a few. There are bird of prey, seal shows and plenty of restaurants and cafes. They are open all summer until 8pm.
This attraction sits just south of the old city in Carcassonne. Here you can see kangaroos, emus, wallabies, and other Australian animals. The difference with this park is that you can walk among the animals and truly interact with them. You can also pan for gold, throw boomerangs and generally experience all things Australian. There is a picnic area and places to purchase food and drinks.
Near Lapenne, north of the D119,(Pamiers to Mirepoix road), this is a working bison farm with bison meat on sale at the shop. The opening times are quite restricted, so check before you go.
April, May, June and September, October; Sundays only
July and August; daily
Maison de Loupes-wolf park
The drive down to Ax-les Thermes is spectacular. There are warm volcanic pools to paddle in and a cable car up into the mountains at Bonascre where the air is clear and the views breath-taking. There are many delightful walks and plenty of wild-life to see, including eagles and alpine marmot (a large ground-dwelling member of the squirrel family). A drive out of Ax on the RN20 and a left turn onto the D22 will take you down the Orlu valley (another lovely drive), and to the Maison de Loupes. This area is a national park where the wolves have acres to range free. Their cubs are born around May but if you are there at another time of the year, they also have baby goats, pigs and sheep. The site also boasts a cafe and a picnic area.
